Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

with the help of the v3 OI boards, I received 160 kW! from the leaf gen2 kit (85 kW / 110 horsepower in the factory version) So it's not necessary to buy expensive gen3 leaf kits, you can get impressive power from cheap gen2. Very interesting! Any indication as to the degree with which it can do th...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

The problem is mostly just with four motors, gears, etc it’s going to be heavy (especially in a ‘garage / budget’ version), hopefully not too far north of 4,000 lb, so trying to keep power to weight up. And no doubt the end result and acceleration will be compared to Teslas etc Also my front gear ra...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

MEGA EDIT - moved big long new post into the quote below. Summary here: I think the number of USBs I need makes all the microcontroller and SBC options not practical. Software and skill level wise, I think CODESYS is very perfect. It is powerful, nice and high level, and learning it will be useful f...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

I'm probably doing the same as you here - I know little about your algorithms so may well be overestimating their complexity, processing requirements, need for debug access and so over complicating the solution. If that's case it does open up other possibilities. If you are happy to work on the fir...

Re: 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 conversion cantidate

Just stopping in to say, that is painful to hear, sincerest condolences. However, being 12k into it was a great deal at least. Good opportunity for anyone in GB, what a perfect EV donor chassis.

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

The Nissan boards come pre-programmed with appropriate firmware and parameters. I also have one up for sale here that has all connectors soldered: https://openinverter.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2769 Excellent - thank you. That one you have for sale is definitely of interest, I am probably going to ...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

When swapping the control boards for the OI aka Rev3 one you can assign different CAN ids for throttle control so they can be all on the same bus. Heck, you could even put the 4 torque values in the same message in different positions ;) Would I be able to control 4 of them with OEM control boards ...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

This sounds like a fun project. I'm assuming each motor will drive a wheel on a 4 wheeled vehicle of some sort? You kinda hinted to this in a different post about ratio. A somewhat related question is dealing with a independent motor per wheel and a software type differential system? Does the VCU h...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

It is indeed a bit out of my comfort zone, but equal to the algorithm development & IP, this whole thing is an opportunity for learning in some areas I'm less experienced at and for that your perspective and that approach/writeup is immensely appreciated. Now just to settle up with some coffee a...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

Curious about how you are going to couple the Leaf motors to the wheels. Are you keeping the Leaf gearbox and losing the diff or replacing with something else? What top speed are you going to gear things for? winters quick change diffs. can get reduction ratios up to soemthing like 9:1, hard mount ...

Re: Gen 3 160kw inverter only outputs 125 kw

Is operation smooth and consistent below request of 2047?

I assume this would be the same situation on any complete 160 kW gen 3 motor+inverter? But is a non-issue on 110 kW units?

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

You can either use the Nissan protocol, either directly or via a Zombieverter (both based on celeron55's reverse engineering of the protocol) Just to confirm - does that same CAN protocol derived by celeron55 (and thus the different solutions using it) work for gen 2 and gen 3 leaf motor/inverters,...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

Sorry, another question on batteries. Just looking at the Blue Energy EHW5 cell which is what I believe Honda use in the NSX. I can't find much data but most of what I do find agrees with this https://www.gs-yuasa.com/en/newsrelease/article.php?ucode=gs171113461410_446 - 5Ah but with a maximum curr...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

Thanks for that, what you've said pretty much confirms the conclusions I'd come to but it's good to have it confirmed by someone who knows the technology. The NSX battery looks well worth a bit more investigation too. Not sure how much of the other thread you read but that NSX dual front motor look...

Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

Sorry, going a little off topic (but not sure it's worth a new thread and is vaguely relevant to this), I have a question that you may be able to help with. Re: VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

Thanks guys, already very glad I asked. If you get into custom hardware and low level software there is a real danger you will spend all your time on that rather than tuning/testing/proving your algorithms. 100%. Basically this post was all about getting input to figure out the best setup to minimiz...

VCU/controller for 4 motor setup

I am trying to figure out hardware and a topology for controlling 4 leaf motors independently - ie different torque / current signals to each. I am planning rev3 OI board on gen 2 leaf inverters. This is to build a platform for proof of concept testing on some torque vectoring IP, leaf motor power l...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

openinverter firmware has no reverse speed limit. Motor and inverter don't care either. Only if you use the stock transmission you'll likely run into issues running it reverse Thank you very much for the quick response and confirmation. Would I be able to simply flip polarity somewhere? Or just wit...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Is it possible to alter the BMW i3 IPM motor/controller to run it in reverse with full functionality, efficiency, max speed, etc? Would be hoping to use the OEM motor controller + openinverter board and software but would be open to other options if need be. Would it be the same vector control algor...
