Re: [WIP] Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

Reviewed motor position in the subframe again today. Current thinking for the motor mounts is: -Run a box section across the two rear mounts -Run another box section from the rear box section to the forward engine mount, with a laser cut plate picking up the various mounting holes on the side of the...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Today I ran the motor again, this time powering pin 35 on the Harwin connector with 5V from the openinverter board via a 10K resistor and registered no current draw on the multimeter. Will plan to use this setup going forward as seems safer to use the regulated power supply on the openinverter board...

Re: [WIP] Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

With the motor back in the subframe and the aircon mounts out the way, it now appears there's (just) sufficient space for it so will be getting on with designing/fabricating the mounting frames.

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Great work CJW, looks like we've managed to cobble together a working inverter! I feel it would be a good idea to put some kind of gate resistance inline (10R?) but probably not expressly necessary. Interested with respect to the parameters, I thought that at some stage there was an i3 variant adde...

Re: [WIP] Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

Finally got the motor spinning successfully with the drop-in board so next step is to figure out how to fit it in the sub-frame and get a set of mounts made. It's quite a tight fit, hoping to be able to get everything in without having to modify the cross-frame to create more space. Aware that the m...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Parameters used for the successful bench test attached. Notes below: -firmware version 5.32.R-foc, with Johanne's code mod applied separately to disable err_out pin that was preventing SPI comms -24V test voltage from a pair of lead acid batteries -no contactors, so parameters for precharge and cont...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Had a go at tracing pin 35 on the gate driver board and looking up datasheets to get a better idea of what's going on here with a view to hopefully confirming that a 12V supply to this pin is correct. Information below with the caveat that I have a fairly basic understanding of electrical circuits a...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Yes, I'm a bit concerned about running it indefinitely on 12V as the only basis for that is some old notes from this thread and the wiki. Was planning to trace where that pin goes on the gate driver board to try and get a better understanding. I have the i3s version, rated at 135kW instead of 125kW,...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Finally got the motor spinning!!! Hooked up 12v to pin 35 on the Harwin connector to the gate driver board and the motor sprung to life. It is now working on analogue throttle control in forward and reverse. Will post full set of parameters later and update notes on the Wiki. IMG-20240410-WA0003.jpeg

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

A couple of interesting points on the cable running to the gate drive board: Pin 35 (IGBT PSU 12V on) is low level 0V Pin 17 (lower gate driver ready) is low level 0V. Notably, Pin 16 (upper gate driver ready) is 5V Should pin 35 have 12V on it from the adapter PCBA? Mine does not appear to. Does t...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

PCBs arrived and fit nicely. Ordered 10 so have spares if anyone needs a pair. Need to double check the resolver connections on the main Ampseal header as it looked like the Sin Hi and Sin Lo might have been mixed up, based on reviewing the two Wiki pages for the mini mainboard and i3 inverter. Will...

Re: [WIP] Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

Current thinking for the battery: -build 96s1p pack from LG Chem E78 pouch cells or similar -27.5kWh total so around 25 kWh usable -104kg for the cells, plus additional weight of cooling and packaging -located above rear subframe where fuel tank was positioned, pending outcome of F/R weight distribu...

Re: [WIP] Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

After a hiatus over the summer I have resumed work on the conversion. -traced the resolver and motor temperature connections -ordered some PCB's to simplify their connection to the openinverter drop-in board -info posted on page 9 of the main i3 hacking thread: https://openinverter.org/forum/viewtop...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

Traced the resolver and motor temp wires at the weekend from the 12 way ERNI connector that connects to the original inverter control board back into the motor housing, sharing some information below in case it's useful. Have also updated the wiki with suspected pinout for the ERNI connector: https:...

Re: i3 controller hacking from diyelectriccar.com

I've ordered some PCB pairs to simplify the motor resolver and temperature sensor connections. One board will sit under the Ampseal connector and allow a PCB header or wires to be connected directly to the pins, the other board will have an ERNI Minibridge connector to mate to the wires coming from ...

Re: Smart Roadster (with BMW i3 motor and inverter)

Planning for the motor to be installed in same orientation as in the i3. It's quite a tight fit front to back, looks like some of the motor castings for the air conditioning motor/compressor on the i3 will need to be trimmed back. The back end of the gearbox is also very close to the central bolt nu...
