Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

@VortexEV To be honest a lot of this is still theoretical and is one of my drivers for the project, I want to see what this combination of components is actually capable of, and what can be done to get them operating at their max. There will be some headroom in the specs for each component, but I ex...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

And on that note, I figured I should give an update of what I have managed to get done over the last couple of months. With the battery pack more or less complete (bar tidying up some BMS wiring and getting the main positive and negative terminals wired in) I've basically been following two threads,...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

It's going good Speedy, thanks for asking. Real life has been taking up a lot of my time recently, I am one of the lucky ones who has been kept very busy with work during this pandemic craziness, but I think I'm back on top of things so hoping to make more progress on the car over the next few weeks.

I must have been working in IT projects for too long, I really enjoyed reading through the last couple of days on this thread. 😄 Fantastic collaboration happening here. Big kudos to Isaac96 for stepping up to the plate and sharing his skills. I'll throw my hat into the ring as a potential tester (as...

Re: VW Touran powered by Nissan Leaf [FINISHED]

Congrats Johannes,

It must be great to see that E plate as evidence of all the hard work.

I have yet to use the "radio" for anything other than playing with settings on the inverter and watching plots of data....but it's great for that :)

That's a great idea Kevin!

I'm up for being a part of this and happy to help organise.

Anyone else in?

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

Wow, a while since I last posted an update. A lot of the work over the last few weeks has focussed on the battery side of things. With the 40kWh 2019 Nissan Leaf stripped down I went on a bit of a spiral of analysis trying to figure out the cleverest way to fit the modules in the space I had where t...

Re: Pre-charge and main contactor connections

I went with the Arduino relay board option in order to stay within the current limits of the board. The ones designed for use with things like the Raspberry Pi/Arduino/STM32 draw very little current themselves (around 20mA) or so, but can handle 10A on whatever they are switching. I'm guessing you m...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

I finally managed to get the brakes working enough that I felt I could risk trying to drive the car out of the garage, and decided to just go for it. I got 6 12v lead acid batteries hooked up to the inverter for about 75vDC and switched the power on and pressed the throttle pedal. I could hear the m...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

I was all set to just drop the car off the jack stands and see if I could get it moving given that the motor is now able to turn the wheels. Common sense kicked in and I figured before doing that I should try to resolve the issue I had with the brakes from when I first drove the car into the garage....

Ticket booked. Can't wait to see what you guys have on show. It was a really good show last year, and the conversions area was definitely the highlight for me. I highly recommend it to anyone considering attending. Hopefully I'll be able to drive my own open source EV to the show instead of an ICE:-D

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

Thanks Fiachra, seems like you're making some pretty great progress too. Drag race sounds like a great idea. It was really cool getting the motor running in the car for the first time, even if it was just up on jack stands. I had to make a few last minute changes to the wiring. Mainly due to me rush...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

Would have loved to, but just running it like that highlighted some issues with the brakes so I will need to do a bit more work on them before I try running it with the wheels on the ground.

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

I've made some good progress since my last update on here, even with a bit of break over Christmas, with the signal wiring installed it in the car and I chopped and welded the four halfshafts I had (2 Nissan, 2 Porsche) to make 2 shafts with Porsche CV joints on the outside and Nissan Leaf CV joints...

Re: The Audi 8e - Powered by Leaf

Great project Fiachra, looks like you've been making swift progress. Good luck with the next steps. There are definite differences between the gen 1 and gen 2 gearboxes. I found one of them the hard way! It was only after making my own custom half shafts and failing to get one of them to mate with m...

Thanks Nimmoev, glad you found some of the videos useful. It actually comes apart pretty easily once you know what your looking at.

Looks like you're making good progress with your conversion, I had a similar frustration with the inverter mount overhang...so I took an angle grinder at it:-)

Back at it with a vengeance after having to take a couple of weeks off. Finally got started on getting the inverter wiring into the car. I had been putting this off as it meant having to take out some of the interior. But I am glad now that I did it. https://youtu.be/omQoT16heVg Unfortunately that n...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

Thanks Johu,

I'm looking forward to using the FOC software when I next get the motor connected to the inverter. I looked at the code you released while working on it during the summer, but had only just gotten my head around the existing paremeters, so figured I would save FOC for another day:-)

I'm starting to run out of excuses for not looking in depth into my battery options. I finally got the motor mounted in the car after a couple of months of over analysing it, so it's time to start moving things forward. Highlights of my last few weeks efforts: https://youtu.be/qslCtb1eW5U https://yo...

Re: Porsche 911 - will a Nissan Leaf drive train do it justice?

Thanks, Yeah, I figured the stock inverter would have a limit a good bit lower than the figure I'm after, but I'm keen to see how close we can get before the stock inverter has nothing more to give. Then I'll probably give a custom inverter a go, but I think there's a lot of fun to be had before we ...
