I don't consider this full control of the units, since it's just an ugly replacement that loses all of the efficiency inherit in the system from Tesla's R&D

Does it really... Most of the efficiency would be in the hardware design of the motor, which we keep. Some can be gained in the power electronics section, which we keep.
If you totally screw up the software or parameters you can loose some efficiency by running too much or too little slip. Yes that is a possible weakness.

Still, hats off for what the guy has achieved. I wonder if it's open knowledge though.
