I used 4 runs of one-pair shielded cable. IIRC Toyota did the same.

You could use Cat8 cable as the pairs are individually shielded and it will have a drain wire and outer braid which you can connect to one of the relevant DRN pins on the inverter. Cat7 cable has no drain wire or braid so is not suitable.

In reality, the data rate is very slow, you may find success with just twisting your own pairs and not shielding. Depends on what else is nearby.

One Cat8 cable for all four pairs? Would be convenient...

Yes, you can use single CAT8 S/FTP cable for all 4 pars.
I used it for resolvers as well but it may be overkill.

The last thing I need is questioning quality of these connections because I imagine debugging would stink. Overkill for the win! Thanks.

My approach was the same, no regrets :D.

Regarding cooling -- what are you guys' experience with heat generation and the transmission/inverter?

* How are you cooling? One radiator for both? Multi? None? How big?
* What kinds of water pump/pumps?
* Any idea of temperatures that you're dealing with?

Damien said in a comment once that he couldn't get the transmission to get hot in the Bexus.

Your thoughts?

I run one 4x8” radiator with two small fans behind it for both, looping through motor then inverter, no problems with temps at all. 1 D5 pump at medium duty, maybe 50%. I stopped monitoring after a couple weeks as it just never really got too hot.

Standard car radiator. I think I used one from a 1L Corsa because it was cheap and small.

Pierberg pump from BMW 3 series - cheap and easy to get running

Series loop, rad > inverter > transmission > reservoir > pump

Pump set to come on when anything hits 35C, fans set to come on when anything hits 45C. Can also do speed based fans, slope them off above 20mph etc.

Pierberg pump has a built in inverter (its a 3ph motor), this can be varied as well via PWM, it also has feedback via LIN I believe.

In the Lexus, inverter shutdown temperature was 125C for any IGBT.

I never found which MTH bytes were MG1 IGBT and MG2 IGBT temp, however these were present in the scan tool and the only comms with the inverter is over MTH so it must be in there.

What type of pump? I see all kinds of different ones listed for BMW and a wide range of prices. What about this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/265315769868?h ... R8ir2uSlXw

Also, how are turning the pump and fan on - arduino? I have an arduino receiving CAN from the VCU that does all sorts of things, so I can use the temp_inv_water data to do what you're doing.

This pump, I got mine for £22. Best to get one which has a plug included

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255203484951 ... SwYeBhfZ69

I cut the outlets off and welded on some threaded pieces which will hold some regular hose barbs.

I don't run a VCU, I designed my own controller which has enough IO to handle all cooling functions as well as everything else powertrain related. You could make up a controller and use CAN or something, yes.

I run a separate loop for the cabin heating which uses another pump and a GM heater.

Fans and everything all temperature and speed based and come on automatically.

An alternative for those that can't weld is to get a BMW hose with the quick connects on, cut the hose crimp and underneath is a fairly standard hose barb. You can fit a hose straight to the pump but they tend to get pushed off the soft humps.

Does anyone know what the next steps should be - I want to verify everything before I get a new inverter. I checked and recheck the wires - and I'm building a new harness from a stock one - just to verify. I just don't seem to be getting anything from the inverter to the VCU

Not sure what else to suggest. You're clearly not getting good communication between the VCU and inverter. If you're sure the connections between the inverter and VCU are correct, you've got a common ground with the inverter, etc... then it should work. I do think it's interesting that in the screenshot it says "MTH Valid: Yes". To me, that implies some communication. But I stress I AM AN AMATUER AT BEST!

What version of the software are you using and have you altered it in any way?

Yes. Same on my setup. Grounded to the same place as the VCU grounds and 12v supply. Sorry.. I don't have anything else to offer.

This was just from checksum output. It didn't account for zero checksums. I later edited this line to ensure the checksum is greater than zero, otherwise an empty packet would show as valid.

Serial.print("\tMTH Valid: "); if (mth_checksum > 0)Serial.print(mth_good ? "Yes" : "No"); else Serial.print("--");

And yes this inverter is not communicating.

Fantastic, thank you! Couple of questions:

What kind of range are you seeing on your 48kwh pack?

Any idea final weight of your build?

What size cables are you using for main battery lines?

I am getting just over 100 miles comfortably, and up to 120 on a good day. This is using around 80% of capacity.
The weight is very close 4000 lbs.
I am using Gauge 2 cables from the battery.
