I have been investigating why charging using a Leaf PDM hasn't been working. It turns out that the main reason is that the PDM is designed to be used with a Type 1 EVSE, but has been put in a vehicle with a Type 2 socket.

The CP protocol is the same, but the PP protocol is different.

Would anyone be able to point me to a circuit to allow a Type 2 EVSE (and vehicle socket) to be used with a Type 1 charger?

I wasn't aware they differed? Got any links to details? I thought both was J1772?

That's actually a good question, and I'm not entirely sure about the answer. Type 1 has a release switch, and type 2 has current capacity detection. Also some vehicles have resistors in the vehicle, and some don't.

I think the only thing that differs, is the PP having a resistance on it for the cable capacity. When I made my type 2 to type 1 cable for public charging, I had to put a resistor in the type 2 side for the lower of the cable rating and the connector ratings. This didn't get connected to the PP line on the cable towards the type 1 side.

Only the car is looking at the PP signal, though maybe some untethered EVSE's might also look at it to adjust the PWM accordingly?


Does the socket have any resistance between PP and PE?

Do you have a type one port to check if it has a pull down?

Type one reference found online. Type 2 cable plug resistances What you need to do is spoof the resistances so it ends up matching the type 1 values.

I've only just seen this reply. After getting some proper sleep I've realised the problem is quite obvious:

Type 1: 120Ω = connected, 480Ω = disconnect switch pressed
Type 2: 220Ω = 32A cable, 680Ω = 16A cable

So I'd have to consider a circuit like this to spoof a 120 ohm load when any EVSE is connected. The charger is represented by +5v and the EVSE is represented by the 680Ω resistor.

Indeed something that simple would work, the remaining question is does the PDM control a locking motor?

It turns out that the Leaf PDM supports type 2 PP lines without this hack. The reason mine wasn't working is because the PE line was disconnected / floating!
