VAG IBooster - Info Thread

Post by Mitchy »

Hey Folks,

Just going to try to formalize some of my sleuthing related to the Iboosters for VAG cars.
@larsrengersen has about the most current info in his blog series https://www.evcreate.nl/installing-the-ibooster/
Great work Lars! Feel free to take some of whatever info comes from this tread for the next sections:

Articles describing the systems:
Kreutz, S. (2014). Ideal regeneration with electromechanical Brake Booster (eBKV) in Volkswagen e-up! and Porsche 918 Spyder. In: Pfeffer, P. (eds) 5th International Munich Chassis Symposium 2014. Proceedings. Springer Vieweg, Wiesbaden.

E-Up Self-study Programme 529
https://www.vdveer-engineering.nl/en/in ... cument/361

Likely going to be a work in progress, so check back for more info/tables. Mostly as all this info is on another computer so I'll write the framework and copy over the info after.
I also currently do not have a CAN IBooster to test my assumptions, So most of this is theoretical

For VW (and Bosch in general) there are two generations of IBooster.
For the first generation booster, there are several bolt patterns, these match the general equivalent booster mounts.

Much of my data comes from EBay auctions and the Ross-Tech VCDS forum.

Pressure Accumulator "Smart Actuator" - There is also a brake accumulator module that ties into the 2nd port on the Brake Master Cyl. Some cars have this, others do not. I'm trying to find out what VCDS coding is responsible for this.
Seems it's there to allow to drop some pressure allowing a greater deadzone to aid regen.
I view this as more of an adjustable volume accumulator.
The Module is referred to as Vx70 in documentation

The main IBooster is referred to as the EBKV in documentation.
Module designation is J539 or NX6 in any wiring schematic.
It's Module 23 in all the ODIS/VCDS software.

Wiring:

GEN2:
3Q0 modules - HW versions up to H06

Wiring:

ZF:
The ID4 appears to be using a ZF booster, likely not compatible with the wiring/form factor of the bosch units.

The modules will default to a fallback assist rate without CANbus, so are totally useable.

CANbus can be connected to try to have an adjustable assist rate depending on the driving mode. The CAN signal from the Booster can also be used to determine pedal position, etc.

My Assumptions:

Being VAG, the unit CANbus will likely need to see some of the following CANbus signals to wake up:
0x3C0 - Klemmen_Status_01 - Terminal 15 status
0x6C0 - Gateway Wakeup signal
0x39C - Gateway 05 (to determine drive modes)
0x644 - Gateway 11 (doubtful, but included incase)
0x392 - ABS Bus Signal (ESP_07)
(Likely a few other ABS signals)

These assumptions are based on the blockmap values:

IDE05816-IDE00086,Input signals from data bus-Accelerator pedal position,0.0, %

Canbus update:

The 'Private CAN' network that is used for the 'Smart Actuator' contains 4 Can Messages:
Still working on a DBC, but here are my initial findings:

0x100 - Some data, but difficult to decipher other than one value counts up, while the other counts down... Maybe it's a position SP for the accumulator?
0x101 - Contains a counter
0x300 - Contains rod position, 16 bit, start bit 0, No scaling thus far, but I needed an offset of -1200 to get to Zero.
0x724 - Single bit, likely UDS

CAN Log and DBC Template attached

My unit, being flexray... The primary vehicle Canbus was dead, no traffic at all. :(
