Prius Gen2 inverter documentation

Post by Malvineous »

Hi all,

I'm interested in seeing if I can repurpose a Prius Gen2 inverter to generate mains power in an off-grid situation. I have found the excellent documentation on the wiki however it doesn't go into detail about how all the signals work (e.g. what voltages they are, are they active high/low, PWM, etc.)

If I understand correctly the existing control boards are all designed for EV use, with things like throttle inputs, however in my case this wouldn't suit me as I'm looking at controlling the inverter without a motor (likely feeding it into a transformer or some kind of inductor to get 240V sine wave out of the PWM output), so I'm after more technical detail on the types of signals I'd need to send.

I've done a search of this forum but although I found a lot of discussion of the inverter, I didn't come across anything going into technical detail, but perhaps I'm just using the wrong keywords, so my apologies if it's somewhere obvious and I've missed it.

Is anyone able to advise whether this stuff is documented anywhere? Thanks!

Even though it doesn't exactly answer your question, it has been done before: https://openinverter.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=22886

I'll do a 3-phase version of it soon. It all runs on the same board as it doesn't really matter if you generate PWM for a motor or a transformer
