Prius gen 2 transaxle welded mg1+mg2 on same controller

Post by linda.ljungdahl »

Hello, forum newbie here, looked around but couldn't really find anything concrete on this subject, hence this post.

If mg2 and mg1 is phase-synced before welded, could you runt both of them from the same controller signals? (IE just connect the mosfet inputs from mg1 and mg2 in parallell to the openinverter controller outputs)

I Understand that phase syncing them to their respective coils probably is a PITA, but if you hook up the same phase from both motors to a scope and spin them, you should be able to sync them pretty well?

So yes it sounds possible in theory, I don’t think anyone has tried, I decided in my case it was easier to just run 2 controller boards, then you actually get to tune each motor before combining the 2. I can see it being a bigger headache than it’s worth

Get the Gen3 inverter with Damien's board, would be my advice.

Don't they spin at different speeds due to the gearing?

Going through some 'old' pictures. From memory, input shaft and power split device are locked together, so both rotate at same speed.
Would need to be sure that with same values, the 2 motors rotate in the same direction.

The 2 Gen Prius is the same. It is the 3rd generation and up that got the "motor speed reduction device", or secondary planetary meant to slow down MG1. Introduced on the P310 (highlander) and higher numbered Transaxles

Note the lower RPM rating of these older transaxles:
Maximum MG1 rpms
  • 6,500 - NHW11 (1st Gen), ~270 VAC
  • 10,000 - NHW20 (2nd Gen), P112 ~400 VAC
  • 13,500 - ZXW30 (3rd Gen), P410 ~600 VAC
  • 17,000 - XW50 (4th Gen), P610 ~600 VAC
Going to be operating at the limit on the highway on a Gen 2 (and way over spec, but possible). This is why the EV mode was so low on the 2nd Gen originally.

Edit: Adding a picture for clarity

Well, the prequsite is that you weld the sun gear so the spin the sam speed.

Will probably get get Damiens dual motor board, just wanted to ventilate a thought :D
