1972 Honda Z600 2019 Leaf conversion

Post by Z600EV »

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread to document my conversion on my 1972 Honda Z600. I'll post pictures later. I purchased a complete 2019 Nissan Leaf motor assembly from top to bottom with all harnesses. What I realized too late was that the inverter for the 2019 model is not the same as the previous Gen 2s, so the adapter board from the Leaf Gen 2 kit does not work. I have the means to have a new adapter board made (I will offer to others) and I was wondering if anyone has access to the pinouts to the connector on the left? I'm hoping that the connections are the same and just a different layout.

Actually a design exists for the Gen3 inverter but it is in some awkward format and I'm not even sure it was published here. Maybe Kelju chimes in.

I was think about just rewiring the internal harness to connect to the Gen 2 adapter board and just hardwire the external connector pigtail to the Gen 2 adapter board.

Unfortunately the Gen 3 DC/DC converter and charger are too tall for my application so I’ll have to come up with an alternative. I would like to repurpose the lower unit to get a clean connection with the inverter.

Anyone interested in a complete Gen 3 upper half? I live in the Melbourne FL area.

Can anyone confirm if this mine is a 160KW inverter? I believe it is from Dala’s video on his upgrade. I believe the “N” signifies it’s a 160KW.

No way! I'm working on an N600 (1971) with a Leaf (EM61). Looking forward to seeing more details on this one (I assume we'll be solving a lot of the same problems).

Are you using the leaf wheel hubs or the original Z wheel hubs? And any thoughts on added/edited suspension (still haven't landed on anything solid)? Where are your batteries going?

Psyched to see another early Honda on here. Good luck, man!

Hey, very cool to hear you're doing one too! I'm going to try and use the stock hub but I may machine new ones to accept a stronger axle end, we'll see. I was going to try and modify the stock subframe to work but I ended up scraping that Idea and slociviccoupe on this forums is helping me build a tubular subframe from scratch. I'm hoping to have the subframe done by the end of the month and then I have to deal with the steering rack. I have to raise and rotate it to clear the leaf gearbox. I'm going to have to machine off the mounting tabs and use a tube clamp setup to make it work. As for suspension, they make a coilover kit that I plan to use with custom springs. The rear may get a custom IRS setup.
