CHAdMO plugs for experimentation...

Post by Mouse »

I've just acquired 6 SHAdMO Charge plugs from the local scrap yard that were in their 'interesting skip' which is usually full of broken lawnmowers and bicycles. They don't normally have this sort of stuff but I usually have a rummage in their interesting skip every now and again and today turned up some good stuff including these fast charge plugs.

I picked them up in case they are any use to anyone for fast charging experimentation. Plus I'm sure if I posted up I saw them but left them behind someone would squeak at me for not getting them!

Can't really bring myself to actually sell them on the open market as they're not new and been taken out of commission and had their cables cut off for reasons unknown to me and may have other faults despite having to buy them back from the scrapyard myself.

So if anyone is interested in them for experimentation reasons I can post one off to you for the cost of the postage + some ££ beer tokens or maybe swapsies for something equally interesting as a good will gesture + I'm working on my own EV motorbike project etc.

Good work grabbing these. I'd be interested in using one to upgrade a 10kW Tesla charger to be a "portable" chademo charger for testing / development. I don't think I have anything very interesting to swap though. Do you know if the cut cable is crimped, or whether it goes into screw terminals? If it's crimped, it'll be a bit more hassle to reuse them.

I'll take 1 am Bristol based if your ever travel that far west, but am at least 2 years off doing any VTG stuff as I still go to finish house, build garage, convince wife to put solar panels on it etc...
Rule 1 of EV Club is don't buy a rust bucket....
Which rule does everyone forget 🤪

That's a good find! Thanks for sharing! I wish I was closer to UK...

These are all Yazaki (1st gen and 2nd gen) CHAdeMO connectors. Unlike some other brands, this one can be opened with screws. I attached pictures of the insides. The locking mechanism is something fun to disassemble, many small parts and springs to loose :) . But to answer catphish's question, all DCFC connectors I have seen in the field (Chademo / CCS, both connector and receptacles, Yazaki, Sumitomo, REMA, Yura, etc.) are crimped and assembled as a single part number (cables + connector is sold a one unit without possibility to source the individual contact pins).

But I'm pretty confident one could splice some good cables inside the body and put them to good use!

Cheers!
