Switching between resolver and encoder

I was just asked via email what hardware changes are necessary to run a board, that is populated for resolver mode, in encoder mode instead.
So I went to check, this is for AB quadrature encoders only:
If the encoder has a push-pull output you need to do nothing at all. Leave JP2.2 and JP2.4 unconnected and find power for the encoder somewhere else. If the encoder is open-collector you need to populate R17 and R18.
Set encmode to AB, done.

For ABZ and single channel it's a bit more changes as you will see on the circuit diagram. Since that has become rare I won't discuss it here

What's the best way to power the encoder in case number one?

You replace R1 and R28 with a solder bridge (or 0 ohm resistor) and remove C46. Then you have GND on JP2.2 and 5V on JP2.4. You can also leave some resistor in place for R28 for some current limiting.
