BEV noise

whilst on my lunch time walk a Tesla Model 3 and a Nissan Leaf happened to drive past me - probably around 30mph. I was struck at how silent the M3 was compared to the Leaf's high pitch whine, and this got me thinking!
Anyone know what is the exact part of the Leaf's drive train makes this noise? Inverter? Motor? Something else? If the inverter what's actually making the noise?
Is it just a 'feature' of the Leaf or is there a way to dial it out with software tuning?
Is it just that the M3 has a better and more sophisticated inverter? or more sound deadening? I'm guessing/hoping using the M3 with the drop in openinverter board will retain the low noise?
Tom.
