Insuring a conversion in the UK

Thought it might be useful to share my experience looking into insuring my converted car in the UK. Insurance is a particular challenge for me because although I have full no claims, and a clean driving licence, I live in the middle of a big city (Manchester) which has off-the-charts risk ratings for car insurance.
I started with four names of possible insurers and brokers from the adverts in various car magazines, and went from there (my initial list ended up with 15 insurers and brokers). This is what they said:
[Recommended options in bold)
Peter James (brokers): Don’t currently have rates from their underwriters for converted cars. It is something they are looking into, but they can’t offer anything at the moment.
Graham Sykes (brokers): Took my details, albeit without much understanding (“Is it turbo-charged, super-charged, or does it have nitrous?”). Clearly have some standard questions from their underwriters for conversions, including the source of the motor and batteries, the power rating of the motor, whether the conversion has been done professionally, and if not whether it will be inspected. They called me back after an hour and told me their underwriters had declined to offer insurance because of the area in which the vehicle will be kept (I live in Manchester), and the modifications.
A-Plan: Put through to their Thatcham branch where they handle modified vehicles. Long hold time here but very helpful when I got through. They asked all the usual questions but not much about the source of the hardware. They called me back the next day to say that their panel of insurers don’t have any policies for cars that have been modified for electric power.
Adrian Flux: I was nervous about phoning Adrian Flux because they were the one name everyone recommended but they had previously refused to quote on insuring my old Alfa GTV at my current address. In the end they did give me a quote but OUCH. £1575.
Greenlight Insurance: “I’m sorry we don’t insure BMWs” WTAF?
Brentacre Insurance: Don’t cover EVs. Tried it with their underwriters but no go.
Performance Direct: "Not something we specialise in. We could refer you to our underwriting team but we wouldn’t be able to agree a value on it."
Keith Michaels: Have covered conversions before. Very knowledgeable, excited about the project and very keen to do it. I was ruled out by my postcode but highly recommended. EDIT: Others have since called KM and been told they don't cover conversions [insert shrug emoji]
Run out of time for today but will keep trying the rest of my list and update here. For information the rest of the list is:
- Swinton
- Sky Insurance
- Footman James
- RH Specialist
- Arkwright Insurance Brokers
- CG Insurance
- Classicline Insurance
