MEB motor and inverter (ID.3, ID.4, Eniaq, etc.)

Just saw this quite exciting teardown on Munro Live:

I really like their system design. Like the Leaf Gen2 motor there are no cables connecting motor and inverter. Additionally, also the resolver plugs straight into the inverter. One more cable saved.

As opposed to Tesla M3 the inverter is still a 2 PCB design, i.e. the gate drivers reside on a separate PCB. Good news for replacement logic board development.

The MEB platform is used in tons of VAG vehicles so these systems should show up plentiful in the future. If anyone wants to get rid of a MEB drivetrain, I'll happily agree to taking it over :D

I saw that as well, could be a great future enhancement to the VOLTswagen ;)

How long would it take to make the board? If we would buy the engine?

I think space is less confined in the i3 inverter, so I won't need 3 iterations to make it fit. That said, holiday season is starting and I will be away a lot. This could start in October or so.
I would only keep the drive train as long as needed, then give it to somebody who wants to do a conversion with it :) I certainly won't do another one in the near future.

Ok, I figured that for my Panamera Conversion the VW engine is to slow. It is a pretty neat / compact unit though. Also the package price is pretty steep. Mainly because of the costs of the driveshafts...

ID3 & ID4 They have slight variation in HV batteries, some the same, some different part numbers/prices but the motors are identical.

ID3, ID4 & Enyaq, Q4 Etron:
Electric drive (includes motor & inverter) = 1EA901131G £2,637.72 PR:N23 (125kw 310Nm)
(motor not currently available separately)
Inverter = 1EA907121C £1090
ID4, Enyaq & Q4 Etron also has Electric drive 1EA901131F = £3,982.50 PR:N06 (150kw 310Nm)
Interestingly Same inverter = 1EA907121C £1090

ID3 only has one motor listed - but press reports list several power output versions upto 150kw, so looks like ID3 uses this presumably smaller rear motor for all power variants 93-150kw, but the larger platform vehicles use the presumably larger rear motor for their high output models?)

HV battery:
J9A small 8 modules
0Z1915913Q £10,681.42
individual module 0Z1915592H £1,011.52

J9C medium 9 modules
0Z1915911Q £12,108.96
individual module 0Z1915592H £1,011.52

J9D large 12 modules
0Z1915910Q £15,083.82
individual module 0Z1915599H £889.56

Interesting the MEB rotor looks much bigger than the Leaf and Tesla rotors. Wonder if its very under rated (power) in its initial launch platforms?

So we can just go to VW parts stores and buy brand new drive units. This is awesome!

Not so fast. I am sure you need VIN from actual ID4 to access those parts.

I checked! Apparently not, they prefer a VIN 'to ensure correct fitment' but there's no issue throughout the order process. I won't actually purchase one (or three) but I got this far.

I'm getting an id.3 battery soon, and asked for a price for the propulsion parts, charger, charge port, wiring, etc.

are there any other parts of interest to also take from the car?

I guess anything electric. Like compressor, PTC heater. But of course the motor is most exciting (pun intended)

I think I have the most important parts.

no separate charge port module.

the 11 kW charger is with Tom de Bree already

I like to lie to myself and say 'yes'...

But I don't have the skills or the time, so probably best to send it to someone who can ;)

would be great if I could use the drivetrain in boats, or others in cars (for boats, reverse must be as fast as forward)

It's a pesky non-feature of the openinverter software that you can't limit reverse speed or torque ;)
I'd really like to get my hands on this.

Would it not be possible to route the throttle thru a voltage reducing circuit active in reverse only? That's how I did it with my Elec-Trak ;)

Has anyone managed to get one of these spinning yet? I'm hovering over buy but don't have any experience on this side so would like to know it's at least possible...

At my workplace in our Vocational school we have been donated MEB motor and inverter. Motor should be fine but inverter is not working. What solution would you recommend to get this motor turning? I know about openinverter prius inverters that can make any motor to turn but that motor should be capable of 150kW and if I understand correctly prius inverter is not. Should we try to get new original inverter? But they are not running yet outside the original car.
update: From the munro teardown video I understand that the motor coolant flows thru the inverter to the motor stator. I have to check is there long enough pipe on the motor coolant input to connect a hose there. Also my colleague said that resolver wires are also connected when inverter bolts on, nice design, isn't it?

Is the powerstage broken or not? Find out how to "fire" the powerstage is step one. What type of motor is it? Encoder type?

Johu can guide you better.

As Mr. Munro shows us the MEB inverter is nicely separated into a logic and a power PCB. It would be awesome to find the CAN commands for running the stock inverter. Otherwise it would be awesome if we could make a drop in logic PCB for it.

If you have a surplus inverter I'll happily take it and give it a shot.

I'll try to find out about the power stage. VW dealer men were very interested so they dismantled it a lot of screws as you saw from Munro video. It'is synchronous motor. Encoder is a usual resolver I believe.
Johu this inverter is not left over, I need to get this motor running so we can build with our students somekind of vehicle to have fun and learn on the way about EV-s. I searched they ask already over 600€ for this inverter in breaking yards. We have already built one electric buggy witch is equipped with last century technology.

Hello,
Has a MEB motor with inverter that is installed in a Smart roadster.
After a break from trying to control an ID.3 Inverter, I now have a handle on it again.
The first attempt was to listen to the CAN traffic to the inverter, but it was overwhelming. So it has shut down.
Now the strategy is to control the power module's IGBTs with the openinverter.org Brain Board Rev 3 and to use the control board's circuits for Resolver and current measurement.
Have now measured the 50 pin connector between the control board and the power board with its galvanic transfers and which IC circuits are on the board.
The next step will be to find the signals from the resolver and the current measurement also the DC converters that feed the control board.
Picture of the power board with IC circuits.

Is there anyone doing something similar?
