International Fast Charging (hello to all Swedish members)

Post by johu »

After taking the 40 kWh Touran on a very promising trip today we decided to do a trip to Sweden with it (instead of the Diesel car, cough). Northbound we will be more or less on E45 until Strömsund or so. Then we return.

How does fast charging work in Sweden? Is there a preferred app that maps all chargers and gives a reasonable price? What are prices? If you hire are stuga on a camp side will they be happy to have you charging there?

Of course this thread can be about any country, just starting with Sweden for above reason.

I have no experience of fast charging but when I want to find a charging station I start at https://uppladdning.nu.

Charging at your destination is at the "stuga" owners discretion. 3-phase outlets are quite common in Swedish households so at least that could be available at the desitnation. Best is to send them a question about it.

EDIT: Also found this site https://chargefinder.com/se when searched.

I drove a 24kWh Leaf from Stockholm to Norway and Back in 2019 with only 2 rfid tags. (1 of them bought in sweden as prepaid tag)

Fortum, now recharge https://rechargeinfra.com/en/

And

Bee, now Mer charging solutions https://no.mer.eco/ladekart/

I have later acquired a grønnkontakt tag for future travels in Norway, but for obvious reason our 2020 summer road trip was cancelled.

Fortums app and tag works great in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Bee / Mer I have not used since 2019, but tag worked 100% and was then available in scandic hotel on sweden. Now I do not know.

Cool, thanks :) It seems that Mer has more charging stations north of Östersund. We will be spending most time in Jämtland.

The Mer app wants a Swedish street address :D So I just entered the address of my student flat in Linköping from many years ago ;)

I asked a friend that's using charging stations more commonly.
Uses the pictured apps.

The "Plugsurfing" app covers several operators but apparently it also has a steep price/kWh so more useful for emergencies.

Thanks, I have acquired a few apps but for example none of them show the charger in Sveg that can be found here https://www.goingelectric.de/stromtanks ... tenplaner/
Also in Jämtland only a hand full of chargers are in the apps but many more on the goingelectric site. Ok, some are free, so they are obviously not in the app

Is this the charging site you are searching for?
https://uppladdning.nu/SiteDetail.aspx? ... 9c22748ef8
Says, is free until 2020-10-31. Operated by EWAYS. Maybe you can contact them and ask?

Yes that one. Will see how they arranged it now. Calling every possible one seems a bit out of scope ;)
Not even sure I need to charge there, it was more an example.

Yes, I agree but good to know when you don't have range to the next charging station...
Might still be free? Still not totaly uncommon with type 2 outlets but this is a fast charger.

Is it worthwhile to sign up for Swish? I mean for charging. Or is that not a thing?

I think "Swish" might be hard for non swedes as it requires "Bankid" which requires a Swedish bank account.

I want to follow up on this with my experience.
I mostly used the Mer app. The Vattenfall app (InCharge) offers the best rates but crashed frequently so I avoided those chargers. In the end I couldn't even add my credit card anymore. Had also installed the Fortum app but never used that either as I couldn't add a payment method. In Jämtland most chargers used the easypark app at a hefty 5 SEK/kWh. One EON charger required navigating to some website, entering credit card and start charging from there.
The only useful RFID card that I also use in Germany sometimes is the Shell/Newmotion card. It worked on some chargers in Sweden and Denmark.

In Sweden I was in quite a few charging queues and experienced the most broken chargers. Definitely plan for enough leeway and don't arrive at an unknown charger with less than 50 km to go. You might have to go (back) to the next one.

Very good follow up.

What was the longest time to wait in queue on your trip? Roughly?

I think the longest waiting time was around 30 minutes.

That's not too bad at all.

Considering it was holiday season after all.

But if it is in middle of nowhere at night, then it might not be so fun..
