Did some motorway miles and while the car was mostly ok, it was obviously lacking in umph. Would cruise happily at 60 but maintaining 70 up hill wasn't so effortless.

Mart.y hit me with a well timed PM offering a leaf motor so an upgrade is in order. Going to be a tight squeeze.
What speed of charging did you see? The Leaf motor would be a great upgrade if you can fit it in.

I've not gone over 50 amps yet, the unit was reporting it could do 120 amps. Need to harness my inner Damien and just open up the taps and see what happens :D

Remind me please how you achieved the charging? ATM all I have is an Outlander PHEV 3kW charger.

Chademo controlled by an Arduino Due and a shield I've bodged up. My AC is the Outlander charger.

Now I'm very interested, any plans or a how too?

That would be great thanks, I've been so focused on getting the batteries installed and the AC charger working I haven't given fast charging much thought but I want to do a road trip at some stage so getting DC charging working would make a huge difference.
I need a bigger hammer!

Hi Jamie,
Just revisited your thread as I have most of a 2014 Outback PHEV sitting in my car port. I already have a rear motor directly mounted to the original gearbox in my ‘74 superbug (its even the same colour as yours!) and plan to use most of the bits from this insurance write off to finish the project. Trying to decide if it’s worth taking the front motor out or just leaving that in the car so that it can still roll to make it easier to dispose of.

Would you use a front motor again?

Bits to remove: rear motor (for a future project) battery pack, inverter, charger, heater, AC pump, anything else worth salvaging?

I’ll probably go with Tom’s new VCU as I don’t want to have to climb a coding mountain as well as everything else.

I wouldn't use it if I was starting again but its adequate with the latest FOC firmware. Low down torque from standstill isnt great but it's ok when spinning. Probably using both front motor and generator(as motor) togrether would be good torque.

Dont really know what else is worth keeping.

I recently picked up some OVMS hardware for cheap second hand. So I've been coding it to support my specific setup.
Still got a few messages to code in and to update my SimpBMS to support charger control over canbus so I can control charging from the app.

It has a cool map too that has real time position and there's charging locations on it.

It has some general IO pins, so hopefully I can use them to implement pre-heating of the cabin and maybe even unlocking/locking the doors if I can be bothered.

I've updated to 5.24, seems further improvements on the cutting out, managed to get OC on the drive with handbrake on but so far not when setting off.
I've attached my params and will grab some logs etc and do some further driving. Some OI users will be getting a go on Thursday too so looking forward to seeing what they think to the improvements.

Looks like your asking firmware to limit dc current for positive torque to 200a and allowing pretty much unlimited regen?

Didn't realise I've got 200a DC limit. Don't think I can get near that anyway.

Looking great, glad it's working well and that the modelling seems to be helping :) (I'm still just playing with the maths though, it's you and Johannes doing all the hard work on the testing and development)

BTW - I stuck your log through the calculator and it gave the following Lq=0.16mH, Ld=0.10mH, flux linkage = 26mWb!

It's almost spot on now. Ideally I'd love more torque from 0rpm, but maybe that's not possible. Hopefully can tweak the params further so I can stamp on it from standstill too. Web logging seems to not work properly, not had chance to look properly.

Not measured efficiency since going to 5.24 from stm32-pete. Was getting ~3.5 miles per kWh I guess not too bad with it being January

The car looks really great in Tom's video and appears to be very well sorted!! It is a real inspiration for a low-cost conversion, especially since these New Beetles are abundant for not much money. I'd love a convertible EV, New Beetle, Cabrio, or Eos have all caught my eye.

Do it. Only problem is it's pretty tight with it being a small car.

Been playing around some more, increased throtcur more, I can just bury the throttle once rolling, but doing it from standstill os still causing cutouts. Wondering about modifying the firmware to limit throttle below a certain rpm as a workaround.

I had wondered if a 2 stage throttle ramp might be useful also as you could set a very low thortramp up to a few hz to limit the potentially harsh take up of driveline slack, this can already kind of be done by setting throtramp very low and disable it all together above a low rpm but then above that it’s down to you to roll on and off the pedal, no just mashing it to the floor!

It takes decimals. throtramprpm does exactly as Ev8 is saying, above it the ramp is disabled completely though
