Flood damaged vehicles

Post by Ctwidle »

Due to recent (ongoing!) weather events on the East Coast of Aus there are likely to be quite a few flood damaged vehicles written off by insurance companies hitting the market in the near future. Interiors (mould) and auto electrics (corrosion) seem to fair quite poorly after submersion but there is less information around about EVs that have been inundated. I suspect that inverters are quite well sealed except for the cabling but what about motors, battery packs, BMSs, DC to DCs, VCUs etc? I’m assuming that most will have been in fresh water but there will have been silt involved rather than salt.
Could it be an opportunity for some recycling or a recipe for more problems down the track?

It’s definitely a gamble, but can definitely be a score. Don’t like to reference rich rebuilds, but he’s rebuilt a few teslas from flooded vehicles. should give you a pretty good idea

It seems all electrical components are fully sealed in EVs. For example the Leaf battery pack has sealant all around and is also home to BMS and contactors. Likewise the Charger/Inverter/Motor stack is completely sealed with gunk.

Leaf
Yeah, I would be cautiously optimistic about buying a flooded one. The Leaf pack is pressure tested in the factory (if they follow their own workshop manual at least).

Tesla
Mind Teslas that were wet in the passenger compartment though, I happen to have some experience with that:

And here we are - AGAIN. Who'd have known? (ignore this lot - https://www.thejuicemedia.com/the_floods/ )

I'm looking at a few of the many Toyota Camry vehicles - G9200-33171 inverters and P314 transmissions/transaxles. These things are as cheap as chips!

I recommend buying only flood-damaged vehicles, not flood AND fire damaged vehicles.

Pretend the transaxles don't have vents and you'll be fine
