We built a manual P-Brake actuator for the Leaf gearbox

Post by janosch »

Hello,

Ollie and Alex built a manual lever for the P-Brake on the Nissan Leaf gearbox. Fits the pulley of our shifter perfectly.

This is how it also works in the eNV200.

Custom made cogs and everything. See below.

See it in action:

Very cool, so that's how little travel is needed to engage it?

Yes, thats it. I am not very involved with the mechanical side, it's about a quarter turn.
The eNV200 has a mechanical actuator, because they kept a mechanical shifter.
Same for our taxis, we keep the shifter and it only goes back and forth.

Hm... but you would need to have a disable switch on one end so you dont pull out into the P brake full power. Just a simple antimoron switch...

We discussed this internally before:
To be a moron and engage the break while driving you would have to go from Drive to Neutral to Reverse(!) to Park where it finally engages, so you are in a lot of trouble before you even get to it.

Same in a fuel powered car, there is nothing to prevent you from ramming it in reverse on the motorway and blow your gearbox up with an analog shifter.

Ah so this is not a single motion operated. Then it is ok! Automotive rules require two separate moves for reversing action. I guess same would apply for park lock.

Which ones by the way? We were discussing this today again, do you have a link?

I think they are in german, a TUV standard. I remembered reading Slovenian translation. I will try to find the origin.
I remember rule stating objectively that reversing direction of driving shouldnt be cause of unintended action. Next there was additional information what would be considered for intended action. Two different moves that you must deliberately perform are considered such.
For example shifting into reverse requires you to either push the lever in or pull it out in addition of shifting.

Automatics need to move past neutral gear P R N D to shift reverse.
And i think to release P brake you need to press brake pedal... there you go, two different intentional actions.

Yeah if you could point me in the direction of this, whichever language that would be fine, I will be able to Google the other versions myself. All that said it makes perfect sense the way you describe it, I just want the original source at hand :)

Hello.

After seeing how easy it is to made work, I decided to tackle my P-brake problem too.

Here is what I found.

This is from EM61
Nissan EM61 P-brake actuator assembly.
Nissan EM61 P-brake actuator assembly.
Nissan EM61 P-brake operational lever and 11mm spanner
Nissan EM61 P-brake operational lever and 11mm spanner
When removing the nissan assembly, it is possible to just change The P lock with a 11mm spanner.

Here is pictures of the 2 positions it goes to:

D = DRIVE
EM61 DRIVE
EM61 DRIVE
_-_-_-_-_-_-_
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

P = PARK
EM61 PARK
EM61 PARK
Any opinions are my own, unless stated otherwise. I take no responsibility if you follow my way of doing things and it doesn't work. Please double check with someone who knows what they are doing.

Yeah exactly, and the spanner turns ... 90 degrees? maybe only 45 even.

I think the little motor could in theory be made to work with an OpenInverter mini board as it is three phase.

We had to de-prioritise the software solution, but if someone wants to tinker something together and publish here that would be great :D
