GS450H Gen3 vs Gen4 Transmission for EV use

Post by NoobMaster »

Hello Everyone.

I have spent time searching for answers for this on the forum but I’m not getting anywhere. :(

Please may I ask the community for help and advice about the differences between:

A) The Generation3 (2006-2011) GS450H transmission (L110)

B) The Generation4 (2012- 2018) GS450H transmission (also L110).

I found a post on the Lexus UK website that listed the evolution of Transmissions on Lexus vehicles.

I have taken a screenshot and will post it here:
Gen4 L110 Transmission
Gen4 L110 Transmission
It simply lists both Generations at Toyota part number “L110” so does that mean the 2 speed CVT is identical in gear ratios and shifter / solenoid operation?

The reason for asking is for an application of the GS450h transmission and inverter in an EV conversion, using Damien’s Zombie VCU controller for a Mk1 Ford Escort. The owner (in his excitement) has already purchased a 4th gen transmission for mock up purposes. (Without checking first regarding its compatibility with the VCU control :? )

I am aware that it’s only the 3rd Gen Inverter Toyota PN G9200-30061 (with sync serials comms) that can be used currently with the VCU -please correct me if I am wrong- because the communications for the 4th gen Inverter Toyota PN G9200-30090 are not yet understood/have been reverse engineered. (Are they canbus?)

So is it possible to use a 4th Gen transmission with a 3rd Gen Inverter?

The orange HV cables between the Inverter and MG1 and MG2 appear to be the same at the Transmission end?? But the connections look different on the Inverter end between Gen3 and Gen4 Inverters. Is this correct?

Are there any other differences that would prevent the use of the Gen4 L110 Transmission?

The Oil pump control module is that the same between Generations of gearbox?

Resolver Plugs?
Shaft Speed Sensors?
Temperature Sensors?
Solenoid Control?

Many thanks for any help and advice

Nick.
