Guy Martin. Worlds fastest road legal EV

Post by Peter »

Hi Forum. Watched Guy Martin last evening driving Moggys road legal Beetle with LDU power. 10.66 secs for the run at Santa Pod with terminal speed 123 mph. Good to see when they were altering parameters that it was using Johannes WiFi parameter adjustment, therefore the very renowned Damien and Johannes hardware I would bet :-) You can claim the worlds fastest road legal control system then :-) Well done.

Notice how it was never mentioned they actually got the record. Which they actually did not get.

I know little of these things, but it was odd they were trying to lighten the car when the main issue seemed to be putting traction down (wheel spin). Needed a few bags of ballast over the rear wheels.

I started registering an account under a VPN on my phone but it wont download the app so I lost interest. Did they ever post the full time slip in the video? Id be curious to see the incrementals. Also curious about weight and tire diameter.

Nope no time slips, but I believe they kept hitting around 120-124 mph top end.

So most likely too much power drop off over the mid range.

Also on the dyno they made 640Nm calculated and then "tweaked" it to 660Nm, but with burning rubber.

It's painfull to watch, they kill a 330e battery pack trying to catch it on fire (it doesn't) then resort to shorting out some old calb and Winston cells! Any one of us would of been happy to have used those batteries before they got their paws on them.
Sorry for the spoilers, the killing of the batteries upset me a little.

We were wondering why they didn't try setting light to petrol cars and fuel tanks in warm weather as a comparison to the battery fires.

I won't comment on the record attempt as its all too easy to armchair engineer after the event. The staged battery fire was truly cringe worthy and straight out of the Youtube "Lithium batteries are dangerous" clickbait playbook. The education (motors, batteries etc) and ev history bits were good and well presented. I just couldn't believe that in 2021 the whole vibe of the thing was still about running out of charge, evs are only good for short trips. Had a good laugh at that as when I watched it yesterday evening eating my dinner I had just driven 272 miles in the Grey Goose with a 22kwh zoe pack!

He knows his limits... 'Are you sure this is dickhead proof?" I guess they have reached the limit of what a 2 wheel drive beetle can do.
There was another element that I was scratching my head about. There was a guy from Michelin (I think) there do all the necessary to get the best out of the tyres... but did you see the tyre profile? Super low. To get a decent launch in drag racing, I have seen them use tall profile tyres. This is to reduce the chance of wheel spin, losing you tenths of seconds, once you put the hammer down. The tyre wall twists and contorts, reducing some of the immediate energy directly to the tarmac. No mention from the Michelin Man that they might want to adopt the drag car rubber plantation setup to gain some seconds.
The range anxiety narrative was given further oxygen too by the apparent failure of charge points along his trip which didn't help.

The Beetle was on 295 width road tyres keeping it as per a 'road legal' car. Richard (Moggy) says the Beetle does 0-60 in 2.65 secs which is fast enough for him :-)

Ah yes, (facepalm emoji) you're correct... forgot about the 'road legal' record attempt they were going for.

Have they not heard of drag radials?

The Rimac Nevera recorded an 8.58 1/4! @ 167.51mph - so that is the quickest and fastest EV road car although it's not actually in 'production' until Dec 2021.
