indeed, very cool.

You can see how the BMS detaches and attaches. Very modular modules :D

Didn't take as long to put a basic model together as I thought, added a basic parametric cad in IGS and parasolid

Picked up a 530e pack today and it has good cell voltages. The pack is a work of art! Over engineered does not come close to describing it.

I think the part linked just above is the 32 way cell tap connector anyway - I guess it's more likely people will need the BMS communication plug which is a 12 way. It's not a stocked part either (and I think it's restricted also, custom part) - but is a standard 2.54 pitch, so you could get a standard header on it, or replace the board connector with a more standard part. Another route would be to just re-pin the existing housing if it's just about cable lengths...

Rated 10 second pulse draw is 5C...if it could do 8 or 10c these would not be bad for my hybrid...(12 modules). How's the pricing ?

Same packaging and dimensions, but not the same specification. The hybrid modules being discussed are 16 cells of 26Ah in series, whilst the ones you linked are 2 35Ah cells in parallel and 8 cell pairs in series.

These however are the same 16s1p layout - Both are the newer (BMW Gen4?) 35Ah cells

I think the 16s is from the 2019+ 3/5/7 hybrids - but I wonder what the 8S2P are from? 8S2P with 12 modules would be a decent 24Kwh pack...

I was literally about to post that. :)

And, yes, that was my thought. But, decent is the operative word. Not excellent. I have higher current needs than what this can provide for my pure EV. But I thought it might be OK for the GS450h drivetrain.

Granted - but it would certainly get many into usable ranges without having to run 2,3 or more parallel packs, yet still offer the modularity. Hopefully there is some luck getting simpBMS to monitor/balance/re-index the attachable BMS...

True. Which brings me back to my other question - given the BMW PHEVs are not as popular here in the US, does the pricing seem decent? 12 modules, with their 15% off, is $2652 before shipping. ($230 for shipping, which seems reasonable from east cost to west coast of USA)

These packs in the UK can be had with some negotiation around £100/kwh ($125). These seem to be in the right ballpark. However they don't seem to include the cell monitoring circuit, so you'd need to factor in buying a bunch separately (and it's still not clear if the IDs can be changed when they are mixed up like that) or a separate(complete) BMS. You are also missing interlink connectors/contactors etc that come with stripping your own pack...

That's why I was asking about connectors. I'd be looking to parallel the cell taps between modules and use one BMS slave.

With the intention of remaking the bus bars on the 16s? and running a single BMS over two modules? Or linking two modules via the taps somehow? Surely there would be current flow over the tap wires as the paralleled cell voltages vary under load?

Anyone know of a UK source for those 8s2p BMW packs? The price from batteryhookup with 15% off is very tempting, but I'd like to avoid shipping from the US if possible.
4 modules in 36s / 5c / 8kWh configuration would be ideal for my bike conversion project...

I've captured some CANbus from the 330e 5 module pack, both internal BMS can, and external connector CAN.

@tom91 - hopefully this helps with your efforts on adding simpbms support...

Overall setup:
5 modules - 4 of which are at 3.87v/cell - one module which is less - 3.68v/cell. Hoping this would kick in any balancing, but unsure if it does this when not charging.

Found even that it requested to balance or atleast something that looks like it

The control message to each module so 0x80 is for module 0 and 0x81 is for module 1 ect. The balancing voltages starts at 0x10C7 4295mV just like the I3 does then changes to 3678mV so as you indicate the lowever cell voltage.

Also got clear capture of a start up sequence to help get the modules started propperly, this was one of the biggest issues I faced with the I3 modules even when most canbus was decoded.

Is anyone with a brick based near Bristol and feels like coming to Zero-EV on a day on the weekend or let me borrow a module? I would like to validate some findings and then share these here and add them to my SimpBMS coding.

Hi, thanks for all this information sharing. I have a 2018 330e pack and really want to use the full internal BMW BMS via CAN. Not even opening the case if possible.

Does anyone know if the 330e pack has the same external CAN commands and data flow as a 2018 BMW X5 PHEV? (Albeit with one extra module?)

I just may (very much on the off-chance a colleague will let me) have the opportunity to log CAN messages to and from the pack external connector on his X5. If (very much if) I can make this happen, what sequence of events would I be looking for to capture the key signals?

This is what I was thinking:

>Start logger and iPhone video at same time of the dash
>Key on
>Try and note when contactor made contact - is it audible somewhere in the car? I'm guessing not. Can't hear them in my Lexus
>Note the SOC and any other info on the dash and more detailed screens
>switch on AC as a load at a known time and see any current data change on CAN
>Put in to D
>Drive
>Stop
>Turn off AC
>Key Off

May be do this a few times at different SOC.

May be great to try a charge cycle to?

Do you think this would be enough?

What is the data rate on the external bus pls?

If this fails, then I'll have to pop the case, and learn from your on-going work with the modules.

Thanks very much for your help and I'll certainly share what I can get if I can get permission.

External bus also at 500kbps - the internal switch gear looks physically identical across the 5/6 module packs I believe, so a full log as described would have a good chance of translating across all types - I've posted a log of the external bus (when disconnected from the car) a few posts up....

The entire contactor/bms/pre charge/iso monitoring can be removed from the housing in a single compact brick, so being able to control it would be useful for many - even if not using in the original case...

So thanks to Cloudy for the captures.

I have gained more confidence in my ways of canbus decoding and analysis.

BMW I3 use a CRC8 checksum with a stuffer in Byte 8 (starting counting at 1), I have concluded the Phev canbus commands do the same.

Now having done some computation, on the SimpBMS, as doing math in excel to do checksums is painful. I have good news, all be it for me, the final XOR in the checksum is IDENTICAL to the I3 one for each ID :D

I will generate a version of my SimpBMS software for more testing, hopefully this weekend.

Have you been able to see any module bus ID coding mechanisms for those mixing packs? Might it be possible to recode in future?

The tis mentions cell module positions and serial numbers are stored in the SME and must be re entered if replacing SME...

"The serial number and installation position of the cell module and cell supervision circuit is stored in the SME. This composition must be maintained during repair. Or when replacing a cell module or cell supervision circuit, note down the serial number and installation position of the newly installed component for the start-up before the assembly."

Are you watching over my shoulder? Been looking at some can captures made by someone showing one set of IDS being no longer present and being replaced by ID 0.

So maybe you could do a quick capture of a pack missing a 'random' CSC (slave module) remember to jump the connector to pass through the connector, maybe just removing the Cell Connector is enough too as the signals as physically linked on the PCB. Looking for more captures showing this behavoir.

I have found how to possibly get the Module into "unassigned" however assigning is what I need to capture now.
