Sourcing CHAdeMO and CCS plugs/sockets

Post by Isaac96 »

Hi all,
Just thought we should try to figure out where to get all our fast charging parts, specifically plugs and sockets.

CHAdeMO sockets are easily available on eBay.
Nissan Leaf port: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-12-OEM-Ni ... SwPkhd--Iw

CCS sockets are also pretty easy.
Chevy Bolt port: https://www.gmpartsdirect.com/oem-parts ... t-24290497
GM part number is 24290497, often that's the easiest way to find it. Lots of other EVs using CCS (Kona, Niro, e-tron, etc.)
Of course the US and EU spec are different, but the HV pins are always the same.

But what about plugs? For Johannes' "Poor man's" and "Rich man's" CHAdeMO chargers, we certainly need something -- and I'm probably going to be adding a little V2H/V2G backdoor to my CHAdeMO setup (to power the house in case of another outage... California wildfires...).

In the old days people were 3D printing plugs. Is that still a thing? Was it ever safe, especially with 125A max CHAdeMO current and 350A for CCS?

Anyone got a good source, or some better search keywords?

I discussed various liability topics with my US attorney a few months ago when we prepared some advice for the Open Inverter owners/administrators. It was very clear that home brew would invalidate any buildings insurance unless it has been tested and approved by a regulatory body. AFAIK the house that recently burnt down in the US following a home brew battery fire has been deemed uninsured.

Buy the plugs/sockets direct from China. It's usually cheaper than eBay and you can specify things like heavy duty AC wiring. We did a group buy last year using some contacts at ZENCAR. Today, i'd just do a search for CCS on AliExpress and organise a group buy 8-)

Thanks Kevin! I'll keep liability in mind...

Here's a CCS-US plug.

CCS-EU plug.

CHAdeMO plug -- these are expensive!!
I'll keep looking, see if I can get something cheaper than $800.
