Electric Mazda RX-8 using 2015 toyota Avalon hybrid inveter

Post by Dylan Witt »

has anyone made a board for the 2015 Toyota avalon Hybrid inverter? i am in the middle of building a electric car with the hybrid transmission, now im stuck trying to figure out how to drive the inverter, i see the prius gen 3 and lexus inverters but because i got this Avalon as a wrecked car for this project it was cheaper that buying all of the other parts from a prius, plus it is the performance version to, so i should be able to get more torque from the motors. could anyone help me? i know damien was working on the boards earlier this year for a release, do you know if the two inverters are the same, i have a youtube video where im slowly panning the camera around the 2015 toyota avalon hybrids inverter control board.

I had to find your video to see which inverter you have:

This looks similar to (but not identical to) an IS300h inverter. What is the part number? We didn't get the Avalon in europe.

Differences I can see at a first glance is two safety plug connectors for the motor cable lid vs 1 for the IS, and of course the mirrored connections for a LHD car.

If the unit is electrically the same as the IS, then Damien has already created a controller for it:

https://www.evbmw.com/index.php/evbmw-w ... board-copy

Not sure how far through the development this is. Never mind, looks like it's up and working!

Yeah that's and is300 inverter logic board for sure. Running one in the De-Ranged rover here:

Basic board but proven working the range rover :

Sorry! I went back and edited it in after flicking through your Github ;)

Do you have a BOM available for this?

Please review the wiki, Damien's GitHub, and his YouTube channel. This is very much a self help process in the first instance :)

Yep , plenty of info on here so dive in. I don't have a bom for that board as it was only really for testing but to my surprise works:)

In DesignSpark at least you can generate a BOM by opening the .pcb file and hitting the 'BOM Quote" button in the top right corner.

Looks like the DesignSpark website has a support section including an article entitled "how can I generate a pick and place file?"

change of plans for the electric mazda rx8, i will be running a gen three prius inverter. i cant seem to get the right information for the is300h board. so ill go with one that is available on the webshop. i will end up using a gen two inverter to charge the battery, 340 volts 176AH. unless i could get an email sent to me of the board for the is300h and related items to get jlcpcb to build me two of them, then i may just stay with the gen three prius inverter

If the information you need is not already published then it's very high risk pursuing a solution on your own if you do not have the relevant electronics skills. Remember this is a community support endeavour and we can only do so much :|

If you need an open inverter solution with guaranteed support then the boards sold by Johannes in the shop are the only option today;

Don't use both a Gen 2 and Gen 3 inverter. They both can be used for battery charging, as they contain multiple inverters.

my ideal behind using both inverters, i want to use the gen 3 for both mg1 and mg2, so i actully need another for a charger. update on the gen three inverter after damien blew the capacitor,i have that is300h inverter im thinking of using the capacitors from the is300h on the prius gen 3 inverter. although the is300h has better cooling and was intended for a performance vehicle compared to the prius. any ideals on what i should be using?

ive ordered the control board from evbmw soon the electric Mazda rx8 will be moving with its own electronics, i have been using a 1500 watt e bike controller to move the car around about 3mph max on 72 volts
i still dont understand how ill be able to get a higher speed from the prius inverter at only 225 volts using four Prius nimh batteries or 320 once i get funds to buy my lithium battery's, i guess frequency plays a large part in being able to speed the electric motors up
