Separating L110 transmission from 2GR-FSE engine (Lexus GS450h)

Post by sfk »

Anyone got some hot tips separating the L110 transmission from the GS450h engine? Is it just a matter of removing the externally accessible bolts holding the 2 together or is there something internal to do with the flywheel/torque converter that needs to be accessed through a service panel?

I know that with auto transmissions you need to jog the flywheel around and remove the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel via the flexplate. I'm not seeing that in this case.

I have all the bolts out and I can wedge the trans and engine apart but seems to be caught up on something and I don't want to force it.

If you can describe how the trans interfaces with the engine or better yet, provide photos that shows inside the bell housing that would be great!

There's a dowel near the top of the mating surface. This will bind if the trans and engine are not in perfect alignment. Make sure they are both level and supported. I then used a flathead screwdriver with a long shank to carefully wedge them apart. There is no internal connection between them. The engine side is a dual mass flywheel with internal spline. The trans side is a shaft with external splines.

The dowel pins can get caught on corrosion and give the impression that there is a fastener holding the two together.

Very offtopic - may I ask about the condition of the flywheel? It is a known (yet rare/obscure) failure point on the ls600h and the gs450h uses the same part.

I looked over the flywheel. Couldn't see anything of concern. Looked perfectly fine.

I'm curious to get an idea of the weight of the engine. I plan to remove my engine from my GS450h and fit in some batteries, so it would be handy to know how many I could fit.

I don't have the engine anymore. I sold it. It was pretty heavy but I had no way of measuring the weight exactly.
According to Google - The 2GR-FSE service weight is 174 kg (384 lb).
