how to 12v wiring tesla

Post by leman2112 »

anyone think they could help me. I'm terrible at reading the simple wiring diagram provided.

I don't know where or how to setup the 12v relays.

can't get my contactors to fire for the life of me.

is +rv perhaps referring to where the relay is hooked up?

like +12v relay voltage or something?

does the +rv, (12v signal) come straight from the battery or off of the logic board?

As far as i know Damien he set the board up to pull contactors to GND using open drain contacts. This meand you need to provide contactor with +12V from ignition and connect the other side of the coil to your board.

For explicit info go to his github

ok thanks. I guess I tried to wire them as if the contactors are receiving power from the logic board. I will go switch it up. thanks!

so my precharge contactor is now working. got 48 volts to the motor for first time! alright!

my ignition contactor is firing on and off rapidly.

I'm just gonna rewire the whole thing.

Hm... you mean they fire like a machine gun? That means that contactor economizer drops the ball... Or ULN2003 driver is damged? Could be that 0.5A is still too much. But really when EV200 contactor pulls in it can draw 3A which will be reduced by economizer to 0.5A in some 10ths of a second. But your circuit is not prepared for that burst.
I suggest you rewire your contactors through smaller relays in such a way mainboard will trigger those relays and they in turn will drive contactors.

I knew I needed to add relays. I just never really set one up before. I'll start studying that. do ya think that the wiring diagram describes where the relay should go and power? is it +rv on the diagram?

ok so I just need the contactors wired through relays. because they require the heavier load to switch.

Yes it looks like that. For all intents and purposes look to small relays as contactors in your schematic and then add contactors to them.

ok got two wired up to relays. just got to get one more. main contactor is now machine gunning off and on. it has a relay but maybe the switching wire has too many amps? huh, we'll see if I can get another one. guess each contactor will eventually need its own relay. I'm so stoked!

Well the problem is your contactor is pulling too much before economizer settles so it resets. I had the same problem.

Dont forget to also try to disconnect freewheeling diode of uln2003 chip. Maybe that is your problem.

I keep reading all the stuff on your work with the uln2003. I don't really understand much of it besides for the fact that you were not getting the ground to properly work.

wooe!! I didn't have pin 22 (system ground) hooked up to ground. just kept thinking pin 11 was all it needed. derp.

main contactor still machine gunning...

I can't find a chip that says uln2003 anywhere on my open inverter logic board..

you think it's on the Tesla inverter board or something, can't really see through the glue? I would buy one I guess if ya think it's bad.

I’ve since realized these contactors get extremely hot from 12v power when closed for extended periods of time...not sure why.
Tesla contactors require economizer circuits... here's some background information;

https://www.gigavac.com/sites/default/f ... al-PWM.pdf

I recommend you use contactors with built in economizers.

Edit: I've updated the wiki;

https://openinverter.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_3_Contactors

I would also recommend you discard the Tesla contactors that got hot. A failure under load would probably destroy the LDU inverter.

just found this. might just need a contactor with an economizer built into it.

ok just hooked up my contactors I purchased on eBay with built in economizer. still got the machine gunning on and off contactor problem...

maybe I need to disconnect the freewheeling diode...

gotta learn what that means now.

Anyone know if the uln2003chip is listed on this diagram?

Now I am just wondering how I will know which pin is the freewheeling diode.

I will keep researching. I love learning about this stuff. pretty cool!
