First spin of a motor using the rear drive unit inverter. Switching at 17.6khz.

Current sensors seem to be easy. J2 header just below the phase terminals gives access.

Analog output of 2.5v at 0A. Measured the following :

Sensor B : 2.500V at 0A going to 2.487V at 1A and 2.4845V at 10A

Sensor A : 2.4980V at 0A going to 2.4964V at 1A and 2.4823V at 10A

And with Elon awake we get a 10khz sine wave as our resolver exciter that goes away when he sleeps .....hmmmm

Decided to take the plunge and give Kicad a go for the model 3 modchip. Intermediate schematic attached. Still need to add a few things like changing Uart2 to LIN for oil pump control etc.

Drive unit made it home. Next up is working out the LIN for oil pump control then its closed loop running time. Boards should be done and in manufacture at JLC after that.

Good to see you're using KiCAD, it definitely was not intuitive for me (Eagle -> KiCAD), but you can always do more with OSS as far as board size, layers, etc., without hitting a paywall. If you have any questions or requests about the program, feel free to ask.

So a mod circuit is still the way forward, do you/someone think later on a CAN-based system could come available.? Not that you/someone need to do it, I just ask is it reasonably possible to achieve such a function without the car itself. Big congratulations on spinning the other motor on the video!

For now... many options including replacing the controller PCB are being considered but we're a long way from a 'production' decision

Possibly... the issue is circumventing the Tesla encryption and VCU dependence while avoiding a knock on the door from Tesla's attorneys

This thread pertains to the development of the Model 3 rear drive unit controller. Please keep it on topic.

I was unhappy with the way the board layout was going particularly around connecting to the existing drive unit logic board so I went away for a while. New attempt is looking much healthier. One 34 way IDC connector and ribbon cable handles all connections from logic board to drive unit board. Using multi colour ribbon will enable easy signal id and provide a stranded wire for each connection.

There will be two versions of this board. One for the model 3 drive units will utilise a smd idc header as we don't want a through hole connector with pins sticking downwards when mounting onto an existing board. A second version will use a standard 2.54mm pitch 34 way header enabling its use as a micro inverter logic board for other projects by use of a male header mounted on the rear of the pcb. Current board dimensions are 80mm x 45mm using 0603 passives.
