Tesla coolant heater

Post by arber333 »

Hi

I have an option to cheaply get one Tesla electric coolant heater.
Unit P/N is 102868900 or 103890100.

Anyone has any data on how to operate it? Is it CAN bus operated or maybe SW bus?
If i am really lucky it would be PWM operated :).

tnx

Is this to use in addition to the outlander and diesel heaters?
VW Beetle 2003
Outlander front generator
Prius Gen 3 inverter (EVBMW logic board)
Outlander charger
3x Golf GTE batteries
Chademo Charging
Outlander water heater

You got me there :)!
I removed Outlander heater because it refused to work above 400Vdc and to get there from 418Vdc it takes about 15 minutes of driving :(. This means i cant effectively defrost my car untill webasto starts. Even that needs its time as it has its own logic... Therefore i want to fit a simple electric heater inline with webasto to operate it up to 55deg untill webasto is fully up to temp. Plan is to operate it with the same switch as webasto and it will also use webasto coolant pump.
Also the space in the forward wheel whell is limited, outlander heater is a large box...

The information on the DIYElectricCar link https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/ ... ox.193729/ could be helpful.

Tnx!
Yes it seems this Tesla heater is a dumb module. The PWM i was reading about applies to HV sourced from the HV control box where IGBT transistors and its drivers are located.
I dont think it would be wise to switch 5kW heater directly with 15A HV relay. Its max power seems awfully borderline and i dont want to have any issue from the heater. I may skip it for now and instead use two Volt battery heaters in tandem. That would be 1500W of heating power. Much more managable and similar to a kettle heater :). Also each heater comes with its own thermistor which i can use to sense 55°C and stop it there.

You can use one from VW, it's controlled via LIN. The signals are known!

Or this setup: https://openinverter.org/forum/viewtopi ... 544#p32544

Downside: requires fitting an inverter. Not awfully powerful at 2 kW
Upside 1: you have an inverter :) and can use it to power something
Upside 2: The pump is built in, helpful if you're on a separate loop
Upside 3: You can also run the unit off 230V AC

OK, what kind of control? LIN or CAN?
Any data on HV and LV connectors?

On photos it looks rather large. I am not sure if i can fit it in...
