Re: Leaf Gen 1 Inverter Board
I bench tested my Leaf Gen1 / VCU using rectified mains power. I determined that the Inverter throws an error when the voltage drops at about 175 - 185 volts. It's not hard to imagine a prius battery plus voltage drop drooping enough to trigger an error when you called for extra current. Add an extr...

Re: Solar Powered Ute
We have our Leaf Gen1 motor now, but no battery yet. I'm controlling the motor using CAN messages to the Leaf inverter. I found that under about 175 volts the inverter gives an error. I used Mains AC to test the motor, limited the Torque to under 32 and it still achieved about 3700 RPM at about 2 am...

Thanks Retro, an old technicians trick
I think I've worked out the polarity, it is in the TMS manual - just had to study it again.

I don't seem to able to add an attachment so I'll try a link to github.

Re: Leaf Gen 1 Inverter Board
Hi guys I have my Gen1 motor at last. I have the harness all wired up and the CAN bus is communicating correctly so far !!! :D Without taking the lid off the inverter I have not been able to determine the the polarity of the Inverters High Volt DC input?? If someone can help by drawing the +ve and -...

Thank Cookie
So 220V works, maybe 140V.
I don't think Shane at Performance EV is using the LEAF VCU, opting for Heubner's inverter instead (?)

Re: Leaf Gen 1 Inverter Board
I'm hoping to receive my gen1 motor in a week or so. I haven't got the batteries for the conversion yet. What battery voltage do I need to spin the em61 on the bench using the LEAF VCU ? - I'm hoping I can use 24 or 48v.

Re: Hardware Precharge Circuit
Looks like it would work. As long as you're happy with the resistor divider values (switch on voltage). Could there be a chance of the Precharge T/O relay chattering?
Maybe benefit with some hysteresis?

Re: EV car conversion hardware
For Pre-charge
I am going to test using a combination of IGBT to turn on and turn off and use multiple low cost relay contacts (240Vac) in series to provide isolation. (controlled by micro which would have other functions) At 640 volts I'd want 3 contacts in series.

Re: Voltswagen -64 "Leaf powered" Gen 1
The nextion looks like a good solution. I've never used one but looks good. We are torn between the simplicity (as far as instrument panels go) of Nextion and going with a RPi so as we can get GPS Mapping and Reversing Camera as well as the instrumentation in the one unit. I look forward to seeing w...

Yes, Nice clean display.
I bought the 7" Pi display.
Not a RPi expert and trying to decide / figure out how to do pretty much what you're doing.
I also want to switch to Reversing camera or GPS mapping as well. Thats just switching applications.
Did you code those gauges in Qt ?

Re: Voltswagen -64 "Leaf powered" Gen 1
Thanks Langoo
I also like your instrument display, did quick calculations on the Amps and Volts and it was around 80kW
Did you display the Amps and Volts gauge on a Raspberry Pi or Android? I couldn't see what the other gauges were.

Re: Voltswagen -64 "Leaf powered" Gen 1
Hi Langoo Do you find much difference or advantages / disadvantages driving the beetle with a CAN based controller compared to the other controller. I'm not particularly worried about speed or 0-60 acceleration. For example, I'm more interested in the torque when trying to climb a curb from a statio...

While I wait for the leaf G1 motor to show up I thought I'd sort out some of the basic electrical components. These parts are not cheap and would like comment on component selection. LEV200 one at each end of the battery string. Bussman Fuse 300A Found an alternate supplier of the fuse at about AUD4...

Last year we travelled with Danette to Mongolia (22,000 miles) and for most the road was just dirt road Wow, that's a long way even for an Aussie :D You provoked a thought. In australia we have a term "Grey Nomad" - I don't know if that's a universal term or not. Wouldn't it be great to c...

Re: Solar Powered Ute
At this stage we are still going for the Leaf EM61 motor. My Leaf NisMo Can Buss Controller I've never played around with CAN bus before so this will be another first. I wanted to start off with a prototype board so I redrew Damien's PCB so it's all through hole and uses the Arduino DUE. This PCB is...

I do like the Lexus transmission but I didn't realise it had options for FWD etc. Another weekend (week/month) of researching how that all works
Cheers

This is my first post on this forum. My brother and I want to convert an old 4x4 Mazda ute and we thought the Leaf gen1 motor might be okay. I'm not sure what my profile shows but we're in Brisbane Australia. It'll be doing city driving for the moment but paddock driving as well. We need the 4wd as ...
