Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I guess it's too hard for DVLA to issue specific guidelines available for prospective converters to read so they know what is required beforehand. Seems DVLA prefer to NOT let anyone know their requirements and at the end be able to say "NO!"

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

So it's all still a complete mess and the DVLA don't know their arse from their elbow. Some things never change.

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I was looking again at the new VED rates planned for 2025 onwards, but I can find no information whatsoever on cars first regd. prior to April 2001. All the web sites that proclaim "all you need to know about …" are basically lying as they never mention earlier cars. Between 2001 and 2017,...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

More bollocks. IMG_20230313_125310315.jpg Basically the same reply as to my local MP. First of all they make no attempt at understanding that DVLA are actually being unlawful in their refusal to reclassify converted EVs. Secondly they spout nonsense about maintaining safety standards while complete...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/maintenance-and-gear/dvlas-dos-and-donts-the-risks-of-modifying-your-classic-car/ A reasonable article giving some exposure to the the recent problems of id being withdrawn. More frighteningly incompetent, ignorant and simply stupid carryings on by DVLA. Two thing...

Re: I-Pace V2H

I was thinking Damien might have some ideas for the I-Pace as he has been reverse engineering its systems (well, inverter anyway). Perhaps he might have an idea how the I-Pace could be tricked into opening its HV DC relays and be able to draw power out of the regular CCS DC connections?

Re: I-Pace V2H

Yes, I was thinking perhaps the DC port could be used, but how to keep it connected would be the issue. I believe it has been figured out how to do this on an ID.4. Was hoping someone might have studied this for the I-Pace.

I-Pace V2H

Seems to be some I-Pace knowledge here, so hoping for some info. How easy/hard would it be to add V2H (Vehicle to Home) capability to the I-Pace, which of course does not come with that facility? I guess it really applies in general to any production EV, but I'm specifically thinking about the I-Pac...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

… and no MOT was required as it is still historic. Thanks, interesting. However, MOT exemption is not limited nor automatically applied to HISTORIC classification cars. They just become applicable at the same age. So a HISTORIC car will still require an MOT unless the exemption form SciroccoEV link...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

Has anyone converted to electric a car already classified as a HISTORIC vehicle (so no tax or MOT requirement). Or Has a converted car (fully re-classified by DVLA as 'ELECTRIC') reach 40 years of age and had it re-classified as HISTORIC? Since the 'Taxation Class' could only be either ELECTRIC or H...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

…Interestingly, the "fuel type" on your MOT history says 'electric'. Funny how it can be changed in some places but not others.. … Re-reading this topic and it is apparent there is confusion over this part of the V5C. So to clarify:- 'Fuel Type' is just that and has no bearing on anything...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I attended CENEX LCV at Millbrook recently and spoke to Sam Denyer. He's the strategy advisor, vehicle policy, for the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. http://www.gov.uk/ozev He's aware of problems with the DVLA and told me that they're negociating behind the scenes. I told him the problems with ...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

Bad news I'm afraid. My local MP took the case to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and I've just received the written reply from his office (surprising since they must be in turmoil at the moment). Anyway… The government is clearly of the opinion that 2001 - 2017 cars converted to electric, should no...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

At least we seem to have got some traction over this, but I am disappointed that they have simply fallen for the DVLA's nonsense that the emisions cannot be changed for these cars, but that is IRRELEVANT. The article even promotes the view that the law is preventing any such reclassification and tha...

I have contacted my MP about this and although not a rapid response, once he actually read what I stated and also the regs in question, he completely agrees with me and has written to the Chancellor about it. Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

As catphish says. That is THE argument they're using to deny us the re-classification when converted to EV. Since an ICE powered car is NOT an 'exempt vehicle', it IS then covered by Schedule 1 and hence cannot have its original emissions figure changed. A restriction I completely understand as that...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

after March 2017. What makes you believe that cars registered after 2017 aren't covered by the exemption? I was under the impression that it includes all vehicles unless they're registered after 2017 *and* have a list price of more than £40,000. Have I missed something? No, you're right, I was simp...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

An interesting find, but is slightly incorrect in its description of exemptions, which include Electrically Propelled Vehicles, except cars regd. after March 2017. So those later cars are NOT 'exempt vehicles' and have their own provision for VED laid out in Schedule 1. They still don't pay VED, but...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

It occurs to me that we need to establish what was the INTENT of those who introduced those regulations. It seems clear to me that as written, their intention was to include all electrically propelled cars as 'Exempt vehicles'. However it is possible that their intention was actually not that and th...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I've been campaigning for many years to instead put car tax on fuel. Well, in my head anyway. It was just the perfect and FAIR way to collect tax proportional to usage of the roads etc. But with the change away from the ICE, it's no longer worth thinking about. The alternative that I read somewhere ...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

The DVLA are not the final authority on this. They probably think they are, but this is British law and the final authority on that is and has always been the courts. It is THEY who interpret the law and even then it can be appealed. But the DVLA? Nah. They're just an organisation set up to handle t...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

Did they say what the next steps would be to force them to change and how much that might cost? No, not at that time. I just wanted to be sure I was not mistaken in my belief that DVLA were getting it wrong. I think there's 2 ways to proceed. Keep badgering the relevant parties, i.e. DVLA, MPs etc ...
