Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Okay, so I borrowed the heated ultrasonic cleaner, ran the carb through two cycles of that, and the generator runs like new. Starts on the first pull and it nice and smooth. Somehow, it even sounds quieter - maybe because of the valve adjustment.

I made a fold-down shelf that will serve double ...

Re: EM57 as a generator head?

No you'll need 12v to fire up the logic, there's no connection between HV and LV systems in these things.

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Oh yeah I did the plug, air filter, all that too. Apparently Simple Green Pro HD works pretty good to soak it.. I'm also at 3500ft so right on the edge of needing the high altitude jet. And Montana is like 4000'. Stupid combustion engines. :D

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Oh that bracket is a great idea, thanks! I had been spending all my time thinking about the bar, hadn't thought about the links too much beyond 'I don't look forward to flattening this tube'. I think I should be able to mill those out of aluminum without too much trouble.

I'm also on a bit of a ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Hm, good point, the bushings will have some give. I might be able to model that directly, have to look into it a bit more. Else I will just model up the bushings and do as you suggested. I also like the idea of the pipes that have the swaybar run through them and then bushings at each end, makes it ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Hmm, I started modeling the bar in CAD and I'm not so sure about the result. I got a good rule of thumb that the bar should have a spring rate of about half the wheel rate, so I'm experimenting with different concepts. Found some torsion tubes that look promising but I think the biggest challenge ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Okay, good point about mounting it on the inside of the frame. I thought that would have it too close to the pivot point but on a second look, it's actually better. Thanks for that (and all the advice and input). I cut the bottom part off one of the cycle wing brackets and it is going to need to be ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Well I've seen some kits with just 1026 DOM tube, which is what I bought. It's also recommended on some Locost forums so hopefully it holds up. I did run a quick calculation of shear stress at max deflection and it seemed ok. I guess welding close to the twisting part of the bar is still not ideal ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Yeah I made a spreadsheet somewhere but the other problems I discovered is availability and the limita of my crappy ram-type pipe bender. The 1/2" ram did ok bending a scrap of 3/4x.120 but when I tried .065 it just kinked. Grabbed myself a piece of 3/4 sch80 that I can bend and then cut out the ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Ah, admittedly I don't really understand how the OI charging works, but the rulebook also has a few things to say about charging - including something about using common charge ports with an EVSE and the BMS has to control charging and all that. I'll double check though, and maybe I can add some ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Okay, haven't had much time to work on the car this past week but I have been able to do some research.

Update on the Cusco diff, I spoke with Cusco USA and they told me this diff only functions as a 1-way (no cams for 1.5- or 2-way). However, they did say they confirmed it will fit the Leaf ...

Find one Johu has recently attached to a post here and that'll probably get you like 95% of the way there. Remember you'll have to tune your individual resolver offset no matter which one you use.

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Oh, yeah actually my shocks do have a rubber bumper on the rod that I could move down and see how far it goes after some hard cornering. Is anti lift controlled by the angle of the upper wishbone? I'm pretty sure I set those level. I could adjust it but I'd have to cut the brackets off and reweld ...

Not sure you could adjust a helical diff at all, unless you got creative with shims maybe.

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

I have a theory about that too. When braking near the limit and the regen torque locks a wheel, it's going to be the wheel with less grip. In a straight line it might just be the one with less weight on it, and very likely the same one that would spin when accelerating in a straight line. The ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Hmm, lots of different opinions on RC that I can find online. I don't seem to have recorded my reasoning in my design notes, but checking my CAD files it looks like I've got a front RC 3.7" off the ground and the rear is 4.7". I guess my CG has changed too, need to factor that in. I did have to ...

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

So my wife talked me out of the platform idea because she wants a hammock for the yard. I couldn't figure out a good way to span the back bay so I was about to buy some hinges and make a folding table that would work as a bed, but I guess the hammock is less work. I didn't realize you're supposed to ...

See if you / someone can record your conversations both about the car and ev safety. They might help you get into races closer to home.

Re: [Driving] Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!

Alright, I'm planning a trip to the USA. I know I said I was nervous about crossing the border but after some more thought and research it seems like regular old Canadians aren't having problems. I contacted the organizers and they were perfectly fine with the car as it sits, since it meets the SCCA ...
