Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

It was the voltage requirements I was thinking about. I imagine that the Subaru hybrid would have to be powered by a battery with similar specs and not 48V or 800V set up, unless I want lots of smoke :-) So for example, the Nissan Leaf pack is 92s (x 3.65V ?) gives 335V. Too much for the Subaru inve...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

Thank you.

I've not looked into how to match batteries with the inverter and motor(s).

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

Sorry for the dumb question but why does it invert to charge the battery ? I assumed it would be a charge controller managing that.

I'm guessing that it's not a simple process.

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

In hybrid one mg is used for starting the ICE and charging so I was trying to work out whether it draws on the inverter or not. It must do when starting the ICE but that's relatively short duration.

Does it have to power it to stop it dragging on the transmission ?

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

With MG1 and MG2 being used to drive, is the inverter sufficient or would a different one be needed ?

So it has a 3.7 diff and looks like it can handle more torque than the hybrid transmission can produce ~3300 lbft

I discovered the Forester hybrid and wondered if it uses the same hybrid transmission. I couldn't find any info on it.

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

Nearly a year later and plans have changed although nothing has happened. I've been watching Damien's videos (evBMW) particularly the ones with the Lexus gearbox which is very similar to the Subaru XV "Crosstrek" 4wd box with 2 motor generators. The XV gearbox would be a much simpler solut...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

According to https://mobile.guideautoweb.com/en/specifications/subaru/crosstrek/limited-hybrid-phev/2020/ The 2020-onwards Hybrid has a 118hp (88kW) motor. Power 118 hp (88 kW) Torque 149 lb·ft @ 1,500 rpm (202 N·m) This looks like it's only the output of mg1 based on the video above. If the output ...

Re: Subaru crosstrek phev transmission [SOLVED]

Does the electro-hydraulic clutch pack only engage when "switched on" or could it engage when there is differential rotation of the front and rear drives ? I am trying to figure out if it could just engage the ball-ramp without hydraulic pressure being applied ? https://www.awdwiki.com/en/...

Re: Mixing motors and batteries

Thanks.

So if I was using a Lexus motor, it should be paired with its matching inverter but it could use Leaf batteries.

Does that also mean that it's not necessary to use all of the donor battery pack ? So if only 15 of the 16 modules fit it could still work ?

Mixing motors and batteries

I see many builds mix components from different manufacturers, Tesla batteries, Lexus motors, etc. I'm not an electronics engineer (physics and computer science degree a long time ago). How do you know which components will work together ? For example the Leaf 62kWh pack is ~352V. Should it always b...

Re: Subaru crosstrek phev transmission [SOLVED]

If this transmission was used in Subaru conversion, how difficult would it be to work out when to activate the rear drive clutch pack ?

I suppose something would have to monitor wheel slip and determine when to activate it. Not trivial.

Re: VW Mild Hybrid Starter Alternator

Last year I was pondering whether one of these starter-generator systems could be fitted to my Subaru diesel. Nothing too sophisticated, just delivering power, regenerate or freewheel depending on throttle position and rpm. Compared to a full EV conversion it would be relatively cheap. The electroni...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

I've watched that video a couple of times. The section from about 15min shows how various motor inputs affect the output. I'm not sure if locking the input would allow both MGs to drive the output. Also, they don't seem to be available in Britain, I'm not sure if the XV e-boxer was sold in great num...

@bratitude I have been watching some of Damiens YT videos on the Lexus transmission. It made me curious about the Crosstrek gearbox that you suggested. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QRMajgb8KiM It's very clever, why did we not make auto boxes like this before using an ICE and a small electric motor ...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

My guesses are that the 4 medium (M) sized batteries would fit in the spare wheel well. Potentially 4 of the 8 small ones will fit in the fuel tank space. I have no idea if the 4 large ones would then fit around the motor in the engine bay. Things are moving quickly in the EV world, maybe the Leaf b...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)

This post by Dala over on the DIY forum helps to answer my questions about the module sizes. At least it puts upper limits on the dimensions. https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/nissan-leaf-62kwh-pack.208654/ PS These are my guesstimates for the size of the modules: L x 4 ~= 250 x 370 x 290 mm M ...

I know that government petitions are generally pointless and few have ever been acted upon but it might be worth a shot.

Create one that asks for ev conversions to be treated the same as any other car conversion.

Re: UK IVA Modifications

There a cottage industry in car conversion that could do quite well given the right conditions but it does look like the dvla is either trying to protect their jobs or a power grab to take total control of any car conversion work.

Then you pull out the LPG certificate to explain the holes.

It wasn't a serious suggestion but it does illustrate how ludicrous they are being.

Re: UK IVA Modifications

Loophole :
1.convert to LPG cutting all necessary holes and adding brackets
2. convert to EV without adding more holes or brackets
